Redaction: An Argument for the Typeface is a project from my Typography course to design a book selling a typeface using prewritten copy. I presented a folder that included a business card and 2 stacks of double-sided flyers, one printed on cheap colored paper and the other on white copy paper. In order to achieve the xeroxed look, I scanned and copied each double-sided page many times.
In it's original exhibition, the Redaction typeface family was screen printed onto portraits in protest of the criminal justice system. The 7 iterations of the font showcase the degradation of legibility as documents are scanned, photocopied, and reproduced throughout time. Drawing on this, I based my concept on how the many variations of the free typeface can be utilized in print materials for cheap mass distribution. Events, protests, concerts, or general informational flyers are easily advertised with these highly readable, versatile, and meaningful fonts.
